  • Trauma (e.g. car accident, dog bite)
  • Breathing difficulties or excessive panting
  • Collapsed or cannot stand
  • Significant bleeding (dripping or flowing)
  • Seizing/fitting- unless a single seizure and pet is now back to normal within 10mins from end of seizure
  • Male cats struggling to pass urine or faeces
  • Eye problems – Eye out of socket or foreign object visible in eye
  • Rabbits- loss of appetite or not defecated for 24hrs, or floppy or not moving
  • Bitten by a snake
  • Swollen abdomen
  • Trouble giving birth
    • If the bitch is at all unwell
    • Puppy visible in vagina and not coming out
    • Presence of dark green vaginal discharge before any puppies have been born
  • Eaten highly toxic/harmful substances
    • Grapes, raisins, sultanas and currants in dogs and cats
    • Dishwasher or laundry detergent (tablets, powder, capsules)
    • Lilies
    • Paracetamol in cats (often Calpol or children’s liquid formulation)
    • Packets/large quantities of ibuprofen or paracetamol
    • Naproxen
    • Wild mushrooms
    • Swallowed or chewed batteries
    • Slug bait containing metaldehyde
    • Rat poison containing Cholecalciferol
    • Anti-freeze (ethylene glycol)
    • Xylitol (ingredient often in chewing gum, toothpaste)
