Ashleigh and AJ among those to benefit from Vets Now’s generous CPD allowance

Vet nurses at Vets Now have always benefitted from a generous CPD allowance.

In their first year, they receive directed clinical training online, in clinic, and in our support office, while in their second year they are allocated £750 pro-rata to spend on CPD plus 20 hours to complete it.

Earlier this month, those allowances improved even further with the news that vet nurses who enrol in the Cert VN ECC or VTS (ECC) now receive additional financial support and time off to study if they sign up to a learning agreement.

AJ Rogers is a head nurse in Coventry. She started working alternate weekends when her children were young and, after increasing her hours gradually, now works full time.

She is a huge advocate of the value of CPD and has benefitted from Vets Now’s commitment to CPD for vet nurses.

AJ used part of her CPD allowance to complete the Advanced Practice in Veterinary Nursing PgCert. She said she did the certificate because she “wanted something to show for the time committed to learning and the PgCert offered interesting content”.

She added: “It’s imperative that we have up-to-date knowledge on the most effective treatments and methods for treating our patients.”

Ashleigh Gower, who joined Vets Now in March 2018 and is based in our Ashford clinic, is currently doing the Cert VN ECC with the support of Vets Now.

Ashleigh said: “It’s a great course. I’m really enjoying myself, learning a lot and it’s helping me in my career as an ECC nurse. It’s pretty intense, there’s a lot to learn and take in but it’s very rewarding. I highly recommend it.

“The certificate is a good way for nurses to extend their knowledge and develop their skills in emergency medicine and provide enhanced patient care.”

Ashleigh said joining Vets Now and doing the Cert VN ECC gave her “a new lease of life”.

“Continual development is essential because it ensures you continue to be competent in the job,” she added. “It enables you to stay up-to-date with the profession as there is always something new to learn. The profession continues to grow on a day-to-day basis”.

“It's imperative that we have up-to-date knowledge on the most effective treatments and methods for treating our patients.”

Cert VN ECC is designed for nurses who have an interest in extending their knowledge and understanding of small animal ECC nursing.

The course is accredited by City and Guilds and takes around 18 months to complete.

Easily accessible and delivered online, it builds upon existing nursing skills and knowledge and also provides a new route for veterinary nurses to develop skills in emergency medicine and enhanced patient care.

Clinical staff at Vets Now also have access to an emergency patient course which runs every six months. This is a tutored online course over 12 weeks and is worth 28 hours of CPD.

We also run practical clinical training from our support office in Dunfermline, Fife. This spans two days and features workshops such as haematology, tubes and case studies.

Senior nurses can attend Vets Now’s ECC Congress as part of their first-year package and RVNs can use their CPD allowance to attend in their second year.

Some of our clinical teams also use their CPD allowance to attend EVECC, IVECCS and BAVECC while others pursue further qualifications, just like AJ and Ashleigh.
