It’s August, and for everyone at Vets Now that means welcoming a new intake of Cutting Edge vets to the team. There are 12 in the latest group, and over the next few weeks, this blog will feature a quickfire Q&A with each of them.
First up is Harriet McHale-Owen, who hails from Rugby, the picturesque market town in Warwickshire which is best known as the birthplace of the sport that bears its name.
Harriet is already familiar with Vets Now having worked in our Coventry clinic during a successful EMS placement. Click on the links if you’d like to follow in Harriet’s footsteps either by signing up for Cutting Edge or doing mentored shifts as part of our EMS programme.
Name: Harriet McHale-Owen
Home town: Rugby, Warwickshire
Where did you go to university? RVC, London
Why did you decide to become a vet? I knew I wanted to be a vet at an early age out of a desire to save lives and make a difference.
How did you end up at Vets Now? After graduating, I spent a year in a first opinion small animal practice which provided its own out of hours. Seeing my own cases out of hours inspired me to pursue a career as an ECC vet. Cutting Edge seemed like the best way of achieving this in terms of the support and training provided.
What advice would you give to anyone considering becoming a vet? It’s hard work but very rewarding – expect to take the good with the bad!
What do you like to do outside of work? I enjoy board games – I helped establish a board games society at my university – and going to music gigs and festivals.
Tell me an interesting fact about yourself: I have a three-legged rescue cat called Timmy who acts more like a dog than a cat!
The next intake for Cutting Edge is in January, and places are filling up fast. We are also recruiting for more experienced vets for Refresh Your Edge. If you, or any vets you know, are interested in applying, please call the Vets Now recruitment team for more information on 01383 841181.
