Discipline Specific Internship in Oncology and Internal Medicine, Vets Now Specialist Referrals, Glasgow 2025

Vets Now Referrals Glasgow is a busy, private referral hospital and first opinion out-of-hours emergency provider in the heart of Glasgow city centre. Our referral clinicians in Internal Medicine and Oncology work collaboratively with referral clinicians in Anaesthesia, Diagnostic Imaging, Emergency and Critical Care, Orthopaedics and Soft Tissue Surgery, supported by experienced and dedicated nursing teams, to provide the best possible standard of care for our patients in our multidisciplinary hospital.
We have current European Board of Veterinary Specialisation residency programmes in Emergency and Critical Care, Internal Medicine and Surgery as well as an established Internship programme.
We are now inviting enthusiastic applicants for our Oncology and Internal Medicine Discipline Specific Internship position (starting October 2025) to join our two DSIs who will be starting in early summer. This position would suit a candidate pursuing an Oncology or Internal Medicine residency, working through a certificate or who wants to expand their skills in Oncology/Internal Medicine. The unique position allows equal exposure to the interconnected disciplines of Oncology and Internal Medicine, perfect preparation for a residency in either discipline.
What we offer:
- A twelve-month training position in Oncology and Internal Medicine
- Working closely with our experienced referral clinicians to investigate and manage a wide variety of Oncology and Internal Medicine cases, with some primary case responsibility

- The potential to bias the rota towards Oncology or Internal Medicine to meet the candidate’s preferences

- Generous renumeration package and workplace pension – salary of £35,000 per annum with RCVS and VDS registration fees covered

What you need:
- A strong interest in small animal Oncology or Internal Medicine
- Excellent communication and English language skills (it would also be desirable that applicants provide evidence of competency in speaking English, as determined by a formal qualification in English such as IELTS or TOEFL)
- High clinical standards and professional integrity, with a strong emphasis on patient and client care
- Attention to detail, particularly with maintaining accurate records and written correspondence
- Eligibility to work in the UK
- Registration/eligibility for registration with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons
- A can-do attitude, and willingness to contribute to a positive, informative, respectful and inclusive environment for all
A minimum of one year experience working in small animal veterinary medicine (prior completion of a small animal rotating internship is desirable but not required)
About our Oncology and Internal Medicine services:
The Oncology service at Vets Now Glasgow is uniquely integrated with two very experienced medical Oncologists, working closely with two high level specialist Soft Tissue Surgeons and a specialist Diagnostic Imaging team, alongside Internal Medicine, Anaesthesia, Emergency and Critical Care and Orthopedics as required. We strive for the goal of advanced outcomes in Oncology with a focus on balancing specialist care with the best quality of life possible for our patients and families. Our Oncology service both provide investigation for undiagnosed neoplasia and advanced therapies for patients with cancer.
The Internal Medicine service at Vets Now Glasgow is piloted by two experienced ECVIM-CA specialists working seamlessly with our Anaesthesia, Diagnostic Imaging, Emergency and Critical Care, Oncology, Orthopaedics and Soft Tissue Surgery services to provide the highest standards in patient and client care. We have access to advanced equipment such as a 64-slice CT, rigid and flexible endoscopy for assessment of the gastrointestinal, respiratory and urinary tracts and C-arm for gastrointestinal and respiratory fluoroscopy. You will observe and hopefully learn to perform various endoscopy procedures, bone marrow biopsy, feeding tube placement and more.
Our popular and unique Discipline Specific Internship programme provides training in both Internal Medicine and Oncology; we intend for the role to be split 50:50 between these disciplines however we do have the potential to tailor the rota to meet individual candidate’s interests. We are dedicated to fostering our interns’ learning and professional growth and we are incredibly proud of our program, with a high proportion of our previous DSIs going straight on to their chosen residency after successful completion of their specialty internship year.
About the location:
Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland, with a vibrant music scene and endless culinary, cultural and sporting opportunities. It is a one-hour drive to Loch Lomond and is in easy reach of skiing in the Cairngorms and surfing on the West Coast. For the hillwalkers out there, there are 282 Munros in Scotland to be bagged! It is well-served by Glasgow International Airport so Europe is easy to explore too!
